As any firstborn can tell you, the arrival of a sister or brother is….fine. My sister was born a little over two years after me, and I vaguely remember wearing a blue peacoat as I visited the new addition. I think I remember wailing as my mother waved to me from her hospital window, wondering why the hell she had to stay there when I had to be taken care of.
Since then, we welcomed another sister, and by that point I was more interested in swimming and tic tacs than seeing a newborn (neither will read this post, and if they do, I REGRET NOTHING).
At 4:20pm on September 24th, 1984, a six-pound, 14-oz Prince Harry was born inside St. Mary’s Lindo wing, the same place as his cousins, older brother and future nephew.
Prince Charles, who was present at birth of both his sons, brought Prince William to meet Harry. According to ITV‘s commentary, William’s sentiments echoed my own back in ’85.
“Like any father, Prince Charles was keen to introduce his two sons to each other at the first opportunity,” the broadcaster explained and Charles guided William into the Lindo Wing entrance. “And so it was that Prince William was led by the hand back to the room where he was born two years ago. William, of course, was excited about seeing his mother again, unaware and uncaring that he was also to visit the new third in line to the throne.
“Inside, the Princess of Wales heard her eldest son’s squeals of delight as he ran down the corridor, and she slipped out of bed to be by the door of her room as he rushed into her arms.”
According to People’s archives, Charles told the crowds outside the hospital, “We’ve nearly got a full polo team now.” And like Catherine did with Prince George, Diana left St. Mary’s a mere 24 hours after having Harry.
Back at Kensington Palace, Charles allegedly told a groundsman that William was fascinated by his new brother and had been climbing “in and out of Harry’s cot.”
Although Kensington Palace has made no mention of whether Prince George will visit his new sister or brother publicly, it’s hoped that he’ll make an appearance similar to the one his father made in 1984.
