Today marked an especially unique Trooping of the Colour, not only because it was Prince George‘s first, but also because he wore a family heirloom. The palace informed royal reporters including, Emily Nash, that George’s blue outfit with cream lace was worn by Prince William for his first balcony appearance in 1984.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore Catherine Walker’s Astrid coat dress with Lock & Co’s Marisabel hat, which many a commentator on Twitter had fun with (H/T to @KateMiddStyle and People‘s Simon Perry for the ID).

Trooping the Colour is an annual parade that officially marks the sovereign’s birthday, even thought the Queen’s actual birthday is April 21st. According to the British Monarchy’s site, the ceremony has taken place each year since the 18th century, except in 1955 when there was a railway strike.
