Just because William and Catherine sat this round out doesn’t mean that other royals were going to watch the Summer Games from the comfort of their homes.
Queen Maxima packed up her chicest summer pieces, as well as orange pants for her husband, and brought her family to her native South America (Her Majesty originally hails from Argentina).
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia supported the Swedish national team, Prince Albert cheered on Monaco, Prince Frederick did the same with Denmark, as did Princess Anne for Great Britain.
What was most pleasant to see was how relaxed the royals looked sitting in the grandstands watching events. Everyone was, for the most part dressed down in polos, half-zips or (in Maxima’s case) maxi dresses.
Prince Albert and Anne’s husband, Sir Timothy Laurence added an air of sophistication at times by donning a sports coat, but that was more the exception to the rule than the norm.
Royals: They Get Down With Their Casual Selves!
Maxima: “Do you mind if we catch a ride home on your plane?”
Carl XVI Gustaf: “Leonore popped a balloon in my ear last week, so I can’t hear a thing.”
The Queen: “One is here in spirit because one’s not coming to Brazil. Good luck, let one know how much gold is brought home.”
“What filter should I use. Mary, pick a filter.”
“Why am I the one jack-assing it all the way down to the concessions stand? Here, take your damn waters.”
GOALLLLLLL!
Royal Aide: “Ma’am, Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne is just a few seats down.”
Anne: “Who?”
Maxima: “He’s totally fangirl’ing”
Willem-Alexander: “I’m totes fangirl’ing.”
Heavens, that’s dreadful.
Don’t you think, ma’am?
“Who has gum? Give your mother some gum.”
“Selfies In Brazil!”
