Earlier today, Netflix debuted a trailer for their newest series, “The Crown,” based on the early reign of Elizabeth II.
The trailer opens with the young queen (played by Claire Foy) testing out St. Edward’s Crown ahead of her June 1953 coronation while her children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne watch.
Charles once said that his mother would come visit him at bath time wearing the crown, attempting to get used to its weight before the coronation.
“I remember my Mama coming, you know, up, when we were being bathed as children, wearing the crown. It was quite funny – practising,” Charles recalled in a 2012 Diamond Jubilee special.
Other scenes in the trailer include Edward VIII’s 1936 abdication, as well as the young Queen’s marriage to Philip Mountbatten (Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith) in 1947.

The resentment many have written about over the years is obvious in the teaser, as the stress of Elizabeth’s position weighs heavy on her marriage to Philip.
Elizabeth’s decision to side with Winston Churchill (played by John Lithgow) and keep her family’s name as the House of Windsor caused much strain between between her and Philip, who believed that she would take his surname.
According to People, The Crown is Netflix’s most expensive shows ever created, totaling $156 million in production costs.
