The World Mourns the Loss of Actor Alan Rickman

Today, veteran actor Alan Rickman, 69, passed away after a battle with cancer.

Rickman starred in countless movies during his career, including Dogma, Die Hard, Harry Potter, Sense and Sensibility, A Little Chaos and  Love, Actually.

I found the above photo of Rickman meeting the Queen at a February 2014 reception for the dramatic arts, hosted by Her Majesty (patron of the organization) and the Duchess of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace.

That evening, Rickman was joined by other greats including Helen Mirren, Angela Lansbury and Stephen Fry.

This morning, in a statement to the BBC, Emma Thompson had this to say about her friend:

“His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was – his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view. I learned a lot from him.

“He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again.”

Daniel Radcliffe summed up the effect of his Harry Potter co-star’s passing with equally beautiful words:

“Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man,” Radcliffe wrote on Google +.

Rickman is survived by his wife, Rima Horton.  The couple met in 1965, but married in secret last year.
