Roughly twelve hours after his birth, the Swedish monarchy has announced the name of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s son.

King Carl Gustaf XVI announced at a Council of State meeting that his new grandson would be named HRH Prince Oscar Carl Olof.

The Council of State is held on the occasion of a royal birth, according to the monarchy’s official site.

“The King convenes the Council of State in accordance with Chapter 5, Article 3 of the Instrument of Government, which states that the Government shall hold a Council of State chaired by the Head of State,” the website explains.

“At the Council of State, The King informs the Government of the title, name, given name and assigned duchy of the heir to the throne.”

Earlier that day, the King’s brother-in-law (husband of Carl Gustaf’s older sister, Princess Birgitta) passed away; he was 83.

As is customary with royal births in several countries, a proper salute was given in the prince’s honor.

My friend, The Court Jeweller, made an excellent prediction on the name, if I do say so:

The Swedes always surprise with their baby names, but I’ll register a guess that the new prince will be called Oscar.

Princess Madeleine shared a photo of the new family (above) of four before they left the hospital.
